I found this posting by Milen Epik ceionstsnt with my experience with my company, which has designed and marketed websites for various companies around the world over the past 20 years—from start-ups, to turn-arounds, to the Fortune 500. As Milen states, it is estimated that only 27% of online shoppers speak English. Any company seeking international growth needs to understand that if they are not translating and addressing cultural differences with their websites, they are leaving money on the table. Beyond that, it is important to show respect for other languages and cultures by putting effort into accurate translations and understanding cultural sensitivities and regional issues. For companies seeking growth beyond their domestic market, the first thing they should look at is the map Milen presents regarding “English tolerance” and localization recommendations. If a company, for example, seeks growth in Brazil due to its population and economic status, it needs to create content and domain presence for Brazil. If it doesn’t, competitors will. My experience is that the use of translated content, country-specific domains, and localization optimization is one of the easiest ways for a company to grow its business outside the country it is headquartered in. A translated website and solid localization work can essentially serve as a regional ‘sales person,’ collecting leads and showing commitment to the market—even before a company commits to personnel additions in the targeted country.Once a company has created the content for localization, it is important, as Milen points out, to submit the new website pages to the leading search engines, such that they can crawl the pages and begin presenting them to their audience/users. For companies desiring to reach world-class “best practice” in marketing and sales revenue growth, it is important to appreciate that a website is never “done,” and this is especially true for companies with translated content and regional websites. It requires an initial effort to get the information up, and then a certain degree of maintenance and freshening to maintain webpage ranking amidst an ever growing field of competitors.
